Following public
outcry over the new directives of MTN, requesting its customers to
embark on a fresh registration of their Subscriber Identification Module
(SIM) cards in order to update their biometrics, the telecoms giant has
sent out its apologies to Nigerians, noting that the present exercise
was necessary to harmonise subscribers database which was needed to
deliver world class services.
Speaking to press
men in Lagos Friday, newly appointed MTN Nigeria Chief Executive
Officer, Ferdi Moolman, who appealed to affected subscribers, said the
whole process sought to benefit both the subscribers and operator as
well as the industry. Moolman said "it has become expedient that they
ensure the telecommunications firm has a solid database of its
subscribers because of the next phase of the telecommunications
revolution, especially in the area of broadband provisioning".
