Oprah Winfrey is cleaning out her closet for charity auction

You get a shoe! And you get a shirt! And you get a dress!
Spring Cleaning — and shopping — is coming early this year. On March 1st, fans of Chicago-based TV mogul Oprah Winfrey will get a chance to log onto eBay and bid on 250 gently-used designer duds for a good cause. Bids start at 99 cents and all proceeds benefit the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, in South Africa.
“The academy provides a supportive educational environment for talented girls who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and strives to equip them with the intellectual and social skills necessary to assume positions of leadership in South Africa and beyond,” the foundation said in a statement.
The auction was announced in the March issue of O, The Oprah Magazine and will last for a few days. In the issue, Winfrey is shown with her good friend Gayle King, sorting through hundreds of items and deciding on which to auction off. Some of the pieces up for grabs appeared on episodes of her show or in the pages of her magazine.
“What I hang on to will have meaning for me. What I give away will be put to good use by someone else. When I'm sure something of mine is going to someone who will really use and appreciate it, I'm completely fine with letting go,” Ms. Winfrey said in a statement.
Fans will get a chance to bid on clothing by Badgley Mischka and Chanel, shoes by Dolce & Gabbana and handbags by Dior and Valentino. More than that, they will be holding onto a bit of pop culture.
“It’s the chance to buy a piece of television history and help change young women’s lives...And the best part is they’re all gently worn and like new. How can you beat that?” O, the Oprah Magazine’s creative director Adam Glassman told People Magazine.
The auction begins at 12 a.m. EST on March 1 and ends on March 4.
