SUNNYSIDE- As the University of South Africa (Unisa) Sunnyside campus finally opened face-to-face registration on Monday, three campus workers found themselves behind bars.
The group participated in the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC)-led protest opposing outsourcing of university work. EFFSC was issued with a court interdict last week, instructing them not to gather within 50 meters of the campus.

The student wing and campus workers ignored the court instruction on Monday morning.
Under the watchful eyes of riot police, a representative from the Pretoria South East Sheriff read out the court interdict advising protesters to move away from the site, but his call fell on deaf ears. Riot police moved in, forcibly removing the crowd and arresting those they could lay their hands on.
“The suspects have been charged with public violence. They will appear at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court within 48 hours,” said police spokesman Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.
EFFSC president Mpho Morolane warned that protest action would intensify at the campus until workers’ demands are met.

“We are not intimidated. We urge workers and students to remain united.
They thought we will be intimidated by the colonial apartheid paper
called a court interdict. They can bring a hundred court interdicts, we
won’t adhere to them. We demand that they release our parents and treat
workers with dignity,” said Morolane.
