Durban - Two workers were killed when the hydraulic lift in which they were working from while repairing Pietermaritzburg streetlights failed and plunged several metres to the ground, paramedics said on Monday.
Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha said that the two had been in the hydraulic lift, commonly called a “cherry picker”, fixing street lights in Pietermaritzburg’s Scottsville suburb on Sunday evening when the accident happened.
It is believed that the two men worked for the Msunduzi Local Municipality.
Botha said that paramedics stabilised the two critically injured men before transporting them to St Anne’s Hospital. However, despite the best efforts of both paramedics and hospital staff the two men succumbed to their injuries.
Comment could not immediately be obtained from Msunduzi municipal spokeswoman Nqobile Madonda.
