Record-breaking temperatures expected to continue
More record-breaking temperatures are expected over large parts of the country on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Bloemfontein and Kimberley recorded their highest temperatures at 41 and 42 degrees.
The SA Weather Service expects Johannesburg to reach at least 39 degrees today and Pretoria could hit 41 degrees.
The highest maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 48.6 at Augrabies Falls.
Emergency services are on high alert and they have warned people to be cautious during the heat wave.
The key points to remember are to stay hydrated and to try and stay out of direct sunlight.
Cooler weather has been forecast for the south-western parts of the Western Cape.
The weather service in Cape Town says rain is expected.
However, forecaster, Mmathapelo Makgabutlane, says warmer temperatures will return at the weekend.
“We've got a cold front that has started to approach us. We're expecting it to bring cloudy conditions and some rainfall in certain areas, confined mainly to the South Western Cape and that will spread along the South Coast later this [Thursday] evening. The rain along the South Coast of the Western Cape is expected to last for the majority of the day tomorrow [on Friday]. For the South Western Cape, we expect a clearance from early tomorrow [Friday] morning,” adds Makgabutlane.
