Ambode appoints Fagbohun, new LASU VC
LAGOS State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the appointment of Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun as the eighth substantive Vice chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU).
Fagbohun, a Professor of Environmental Law, was, until his appointment, the director of Research at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of Lagos.
The appointment was contained in a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde.
According to the statement, following the expiration of the tenure of Prof. John Obafunwa as the 7th substantive vice chancellor of Lagos State University on October 31, 2015, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Fidelis Olisamedua Njokanma assumed the position of acting vice chancellor.
Fagbohun, was born on October 19, 1966 and hails from Akesan in the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.
At different times, he served as a member of Senate of the Lagos State University; Head of Department of Business Law and later Department of Private and Property Law; Coordinator, Law Centre; Coordinator of the Department of Environmental Law and Allied Disciplines of the Centre for Environment and Science Education of the Lagos State University, and was, for several years, the Editor-in-Chief of the LASU Law Journal.
Prof. Fagbohun is a member of several academic and professional bodies, and a fellow of a number of national and international institutions.
In a related development, the governor has assured that his administration will uphold the rule of law and deepen democracy, especially by carrying out prompt periodic review of obsolete laws to bring them in tune with current realities for relevance and effectiveness.
The governor, who spoke yesterday at the Lagos House while inaugurating the new board of Lagos State Law Reform Commission (LSLRC), said such periodic review was important to him in achieving the goal of creating an enabling environment for investors, entrepreneurs and making Lagos globally competitive.
He said it was a widely acknowledged fact that all modern and civilised societies thrive on the quality of laws which regulate and guide the actions of government, organisations, individuals and institutions, and that the dynamics of law relative to time and circumstances, however, demands that such laws were revisited periodically to ensure their relevance and effectiveness.
The governor while recalling the statutory role of LSLRC of facilitating the process of reviewing the state laws with a view to making appropriate recommendations for the repeal or amendment of such laws or provisions that have become obsolete, said the commission had made commendable progress since 2012 when it was established, and cited recent presentation of the compiled laws of the state.
Ambode, however, urged members of the newly inaugurated board to expedite action on the creation of electronic portal, which will provide access to the laws of the state online from anywhere in the world.
“This is a major project which the new board has the responsibility to deliver in record time because it is very vital to the success of our drive to attract investors to our state.
“Members of the board have been carefully selected based on merit, experience and knowledge of the law. I, therefore, have absolute confidence in your ability to deliver on the commission’s mandate. I look forward to your recommendations and inputs from consultations with stakeholders,” the governor said.
Chairman of the newly inaugurated board is Prof. Gbolahan Ellias (SAN), while members are Dr. Omogbai Omo-Eboh, Mr. Ademola Kamar Adisa Sadiq, Mrs. Adeshola Williams and Mrs. Tola Akinsanya. Mrs. Ade Adeyemo is expected to serve as secretary
Speaking earlier at the inauguration, Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, said the past board was inaugurated on March 12, 2012, and was dissolved by Governor Ambode on June 15, 2015 in accordance with the provision of the law establishing the commission, as amended in 2012.
