Women job candidates reveal the worst ever questions they've been asked by interviewers
Two out of five women at job interviews have been asked ‘inappropriate’ questions such as ‘are you pregnant? ’ - and even ‘do you fancy me?’
A survey of nearly 3,000 working adults who have attended at least one interview in the last three years has revealed a huge ‘ gender divide ’ when it comes to meeting potential bosses.
While 41% of women have been asked embarrassing questions, less than an eighth of men (12%) have had a similar experience.
Other howlers from the interview room included:
- “How likely are you to be wanting or planning to have a baby in the next year or so?”
- “You look really young! Are you sure you’re old enough to be applying for a job here?”
- “You’re quite a good looking girl, have you got yourself a boyfriend?”
- “Do you plan to be staying at this company for a long time?”
By contrast, men were also most likely to be asked about their marital status (9%), but this was followed by their lifestyle habits, such as how much they drink or smoke, (7%) and their sexual preferences (7%).
Some 8% of females stated that they had been asked ‘other’ inappropriate questions, including whether they were currently pregnant and whether they found their interviewer attractive.
And when asked if they ever felt that they had been discriminated for or against on the basis of their gender, 21% of women stated that they felt they had, compared to 7% of men.
The survey for student and graduate recruitment app Debut , a, found that 88% of men said they had never been asked an inappropriate question, compared to 59% of women.
