The ultimate battle of men and machines is to return after BBC Two announced a reboot of Robot Wars with 'more robots, battles and science than ever before'.

Following the format of the original series, teams of roboticists will see their mechanic creations go head-to-head with the sole purpose of destroying their competitor.

The new six-part series promises a 'raft of technological advances' including a new bullet-proof, purpose-built fighting arena and 'state-of-the-art cameras' to capture every destructive move.

The new series will be recorded in Glasgow and will air 'later this year'.

Robot Wars ran on the BBC from 1998 to 2002. It then moved to Channel 5 for a final series in 2003.

Fans will fondly remember house robots such as Sir Killalot, Shunt and Sergeant Bash, which took on competitors in various 'pits' and 'arenas' including the Pit of Oblivion and the Fire Pit.

Over the course of its five-year stint, hosts included Craig Charles with pit reporter Philippa Forrester, Jeremy Clarkson and Jayne Middlemass.

'It is remarkable to see how much more powerful these robots have become since the series last aired, with battles now staged in an arena that is literally bullet-proof.'

A presenter for the show has not been announced and producers said they will start casting soon.

Kim Shillinglaw, Controller of BBC Two and BBC Four, added: 'Robot Wars is an absolute TV classic and I'm thrilled to be updating it for the next generation of viewers.

'With new technological advances making for an even more exciting and immersive experience, this is a fantastic example of the kind of content-rich factual entertainment that BBC Two excels at.'

Mentorn Scotland will film the series at the new arena in Glasgow and it will air later this year
