How often have we seen movies and video games in which guns are fired into the water, only to have the bullets seemingly travel in a straight line just like they would in real life? It turns out that this is actually not very accurate, and to prove that, physicist Andreas Wahl decided to put it to the test by putting his life on the line.
This was done by placing a gun underwater with him standing in front of it holding a string that will pull the gun’s trigger. We know, it sounds almost suicidal, but here’s the thing: it did not even come close to hitting Wahl. In fact if you were to check out the video above, you’ll realize that the bullet seems to lose a lot of its momentum before it travels downwards, not even halfway to its mark.
This has to do with resistance underwater, which we’re sure many of you guys know since most of us have swam or played around in the pool before. According to the video, “It’s harder to create movement in water than in air, because water molecules are closer together than air molecules.”
This is actually not the first time that Wahl has done something crazy. Previously he had sprayed himself with water before attempting to roast himself in a fire, and there was another time he fell from a great height using a weight and a thin rope to break his fall to prove physical law. In the meantime you can check out the video above to see Wahl’s experiment with the underwater gun, or check out the videos below for some of his other stunts.
