But it is believed that her troubled ghost still haunts the dark woods and visitors say they hear whispers in the night and feel the dolls' eyes following them through the trees.
The nightmare-inducing dolls – which are dirty and decaying from the damp forest – were put there by a reclusive Mexican man named Julian Santana Barrera.
He retreated into the woods soon after the little girl drowned there and claimed he could hear her tormented screams and footsteps in the darkness.
But he began to hear whispers, footsteps and the anguished wails despite being miles from civilisation deep in the woods of Xochimilco.

The result is an eerie collection of partially disembodied dolls, with glassy eyes and dirty faces.
Reports suggest the dead girl may never have even existed, that she was a tale made up by Julian after years of isolation in the woods.
However, photographers and tourists still flock to the site, which is a two-hour canal ride from Mexico City.
And despite it's daunting appearance, locals describe the area as "charmed" instead of haunted. But travellers still claim that they can hear the dolls whispering as they walk through the wooded trail.
