Harper has now moved to Sunderland on a short-term deal until the end of the season though and immediately deleted his Twitter account, amid abuse fromNewcastle fans.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, how it all happened,” explained Harper.

Klopp: Liverpool won’t panic buy

Jurgen Klopp has refused to discuss Liverpool’s bid for Alex Teixeira – but claims the Reds will not make panic buys.
Liverpool have offered £24.5million to Shakhtar Donetsk for Teixeira and the Ukraine side are understood to want £38million for the Brazilian attacker.
But Klopp would not be drawn on Liverpool’s efforts to sign Teixeira, which could smash the club record fee of £35million they paid for Andy Carroll, writes Mirror Football’s David Anderson.
“I have nothing to say about this,” said the Reds boss. “We could talk about a lot of players in the world and I could, if we had time for this, talk about the qualities they have.”

City and Liverpool target Sane told to stay at Schalke

Premier League target Leroy Sane has been warned to stay at Schalke by Germany legend Lothar Matthaus.
Both Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly interested in luring Sane to the Premier League after an impressive season in the Bundesliga.
Matthaus told Sport Bild: “I advise the boy to stay at Schalke. He doesn’t have the maturity to play for an absolute top club.
“If he goes after this season to a team such as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Manchester City, it would be dangerous for his development.”

Wenger set for new Arsenal deal?

Arsene Wenger is reportedly close to agreeing a new deal to extend his stay as Arsenal manager.
The Frenchman has 18 months remaining on his current contract, but The Sun report that is set to be extended.
Arsenal haven’t won a Premier League title in over a decade, but are in striking distance of breaking the drought this term.
The Gunners are top of the Premier League going into this weekend’s fixtures, and take on Chelsea at the Emirates tomorrow.
Title rivals Leicester and Manchester City face Stoke and West Ham respectively.

City are hindering Roberts’ career, says Brooking

Manchester City are hindering the career progression of young sensation Patrick Roberts , insists Sir Trevor Brooking.
The former Fulham starlet joined City in the summer and featured in the clashes with Sunderland and Tottenham back in September, report the Manchester Evening News.
Brooking, a former FA head of development, does not think Roberts’ playing time is sufficient for a player he believed can help England win the European Championships in four years.
“Patrick has the potential to be a special player and an England regular,” he told The Sun.
“He’s part of a very talented crop of youngsters we have who could win Euro 2020. But he needs to play in order to develop — and that is not happening.
“He’s only had a few run outs as a sub, one in the league and two in the Capital One Cup. That’s not enough.”

Saturday’s newspaper gossip round-up

The close of the January transfer window is very nearly upon us.
Like that event that happens in December, we spend months building up to it and it’s over within a shot.
The madness is really starting to kick off now after a slow couple of weeks – and hopefully there will be more to come.
After all, will Norwich (yes, Norwich) really end the window as the Premier League’s biggest spenders?
With so much to keep across why not take a look at our round-up of all the stories from Saturday’s papers and online HERE

Roberto Martinez vows to keep duo

Roberto Martinez vowed Everton will not sell any stars this month – but cannot make the same promise for the summer.
Manager Martinez is adamant prized talents Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley and John Stones will not be leaving Everton this month for any price.
But the Blues’ boss says he cannot be so certain that no-one will go at the end of the season.
“Nobody is going to leave,” he said. “None of our players who have been performing well are going to leave in January.
“January is not a window where we want to bring instability to our squad.
“We are not even going to consider losing any member of our squad, who is going to be very important to us.
“That’s the clarity we have. We are not even going to entertain anybody’s future now.
“The summer is different. You cannot say what is going to happen six months down the line.”

Sunderland told to forget signing Swansea’s Ayew

Sam Allardyce has been told he has no chance of landing Andre Ayew from relegation rivals Swansea.
Sunderland boss Allardyce is keen on taking the Ghanaian to the Stadium of Light, and has already had two bids rejected for the 26-year-old.
The Black Cats were ready to propose a swap deal to send striker Fabio Borini down to South Wales, to rejoin a club he helped get promoted to the Premier League in 2011 while on loan from Chelsea.
But Alan Curtis, who had stood in as manager since December, has rubbished talk that Swansea are ready to let their top scorer – who only arrived last summer from Marseille – leave.
“It would be absolute madness if we were to let Andre leave,” said Curtis, ahead ofSunday’s visit to Everton.

Crystal Palace told to cough up for Adebayor

Crystal Palace will have to pay Emmanuel Adebayor £77,000-a-week if they want to sign him this month.
The Togo striker, 31, left Tottenham in September after being frozen out by Mauricio Pochettino.
But his contract does not expire until the summer, meaning Spurs are still paying him his £102,000-a-week wages.
Palace boss Alan Pardew has admitted Adebayor is on his radar as the South Londoners hunt an experienced striker.
But the club have reservations over paying his huge wages – Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would make up the remaining £25,000-a-week – and are exploring other avenues.

Arsenal make fresh bid for Leicester’s Chilwell

Arsenal have made a fresh bid to sign Leicester teenager Ben Chilwell.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wants to get the deal done in this window rather than risk losing the highly-rated left back.
England Under-21 starlet Chilwell, 19, has also been a target for Liverpool and Manchester City, although Leicester are battling to keep him and have offered him a new deal.
Arsenal had a £3m bid turned down last summer but are back in again as they look to bolster their squad.

Falcao heading for Chelsea exit?

Has Falcao just confirmed he’s leaving Chelsea?
The Colombian has been on the outside looking in with the Blues this season and appears ready to call it quits.
“I focus in one thing: forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. Philippians 3:13,” he wrote on Instagram last night.
Hmmm.

Arsenal gossip round-up

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid left-back Nacho.
The 26-year-old is struggling for regular first-team action at the Bernabeu, and The Sun report the Gunners are considering a move for his services.
He is currently playing second fiddle to Marcelo in the Spanish capital, who was named in the FIFPro World XI at the Ballon d’Or awards.
Arsene Wenger has insisted he will do business in January, if the right deal at the right price becomes available.

Liverpool gossip round-up

Italian outlet Calcionews24 say dialogue has begun, although the move would be likely to take place over the summer rather than in the current window.
The 22-year-old has played a lot of games in France despite his tender years, appearing in 34 top-flight fixtures in each of the last two seasons.
He has played in 18 Ligue 1 matches so far this term, scoring once to add to his seven league strikers in the last campaign. Napoli, Inter Milan, Roma and Juventus are all also allegedly interested.

Red Devils leading race for teen hotshot

Manchester United are also reportedly closing in on one of Europe’s hottest teenage properties.
Benfica starlet Renato Sanches has attracted interest from across the continent, but the Red Devils have moved into pole position to land his signature, according to theDaily Mail.
United are apparently keen to tie up a deal this month to prevent a summer bidding war, and are hopeful they could sign the 18-year-old attacking midfielder for around half of his £60million buyout clause.
Lopes could be loaned back to the Portuguese giants until the summer if the deal goes through.

That is according to an exclusive report in Gazzetta World, who say the Red Devils have made a ‘proper offer’ to lure the Brazilian to Old Trafford.
Louis van Gaal’s side were strongly linked with a move for the Brazil skipper over the summer, with the player himself admitting the Premier League giants had made a move for his services.
