36 die in Delta road crashes
A total of 36 persons died in 40 road accidents across Delta State in the last quarter (October, November and December) of last year, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Rindom Kumven said yesterday in Asaba.
According to Kumven, 121 persons sustained injuries in the crashes, adding that 15 out of the 40 crashes were fatal while 17 were serious, just as nine were minor.
Kumven said there was a significant reduction in the number of crashes during the period under review when compared to the last quarter of 2014.
He gave the percentage of decrease as 49 in road crashes, 43 in the number killed, 38 in the number of injured and 59 in the number of casualties.
Kumven attributed the decrease to increase enlightenment campaigns by FRSC in collaboration with non-governmental organizations, corporate organisations and concerned individuals, as well as compliance to traffic rules by motorists.
He listed Agbor-Issele-Uku and Ughelli axis of the state as black spots for vehicular accidents which he said, were usually caused by speed violation, tyre burst and dangerous overtaking.
Meanwhile, two persons were reported dead while three others sustained injuries in an accident which occurred near Asaba Airport along Benin-Asaba expressway late Tuesday.
Kumven said a Dangote truck was making a U-turn on the expressway before the Toyota bus with registration number JJJ 526 SK, Lagos conveying the victims ran into it.
